Israeli extremist and former Minister of Interior Ayelet Shaked has claimed in an interview that the country should “take advantage of the destruction” it has wrought upon the Gaza Strip to force “all two million” Palestinians in the region to leave.
In an interview with an Israeli television station, Shaked spoke about transforming the southern Gazan city of Khan Younis – which, before the war had a population of around 300,000, including around 40,000 people living in a refugee camp within the city – “into a soccer field.”
“With God and the IDF’s [Israeli Defense Forces] help, after we turn Khan Younis too into a soccer field, I’m sure there will be international pressure at some point, hopefully after we finish the job, to rehabilitate Gaza, and to see what needs to be done with Gaza,” said Shaked. (Related: Gaza’s dwindling Palestinian Christian community could be COMPLETELY WIPED OUT by Israeli attacks.)
Shaked made this statement around the time when Israel’s indiscriminate air and ground attacks on the Gaza Strip have already killed more than 14,500 Palestinians, most of them women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
In the interview, Shaked also claimed that the world should bear the responsibility of Israel’s ethnic cleansing campaign by taking in “quotas” of Gazans numbering in the tens of thousands.
“We need to take advantage of … the destruction that we will wreak upon them, in order to tell the countries of the world, that each one of them should take a quota [of Gazans],” said Shaked. “It can be 20,000 or 50,000? So, they too should shoulder the burden, in order to allow Gazans to leave.”
“You have to understand, it was hard for them to leave until now. It was complicated to leave Gaza. We need to change our mindset and let them leave,” added Shaked, suggesting that Palestinians leaving Gaza is somehow a choice being given to Gazans and not forced upon them by the invading IDF. “In the last few years, half a million young [Gazans] emigrated. We need all two million of them to leave. In all honesty, that’s the solution for Gaza.”
Shaked’s comments also echo those made by other Israeli politicians, including both members of Netanyahu’s government and members of the Israeli opposition. Two such figures – Danny Denon of Netanyahu’s Likud party and Ram Ben-Barak of the largest opposition party Yesh Atid – have claimed that the Western world “should offer a haven for Gaza residents who seek relocation.”
This kind of thinking is unfortunately very common within Israeli society and with supporters of Zionism around the world. Members of the IDF have been recorded claiming that they want to flood Western nations with Gazan refugees, and pro-Israeli journalists like Breitbart editor-at-large Joel Pollak have called for Gaza to be “wiped out,” “plowed” and then annexed to Israel.
