Federal authorities have arrested an Arizona resident for threatening to kill President-elect Donald Trump and his family.
Court documents revealed that the suspect, Manuel Tamayo-Torres, has a criminal history that prohibits him from owning firearms. This includes a 2003 felony conviction for assault causing great bodily injury, and a restraining order against him obtained by his ex-wife last July.
Despite these, Tamayo-Torres still attempted to purchase firearms on Nov. 13 and Nov. 15, 2023 at a gun store in Phoenix. According to prosecutors, he lied on the federal background check forms by not declaring his criminal records. Fortunately, Tamayo-Torres was unsuccessful in his attempt to obtain firearms as his background check attempts were flagged as “delayed” and subsequently “denied.”
Filings also disclosed the suspect’s threatening and conspiratorial videos posted on Facebook. One video showed Tamayo-Torres accusing Trump of human trafficking and conspiring to harm his children, though it is unclear if he has any children. Another video showed him brandishing a rifle while making inflammatory comments about the president-elect and his family.
“You’re Caucasian nothing,” Tamayo-Torres allegedly ranted in a Facebook video posted on Nov. 21. “You’ll earn nothing, Aryan money; that’s all you have. You’re a low-life scum; I’ll spit in your f*****g face, motherf****r, and if they give me a chance, I’m going to f*****g bury you myself.”
Authorities also discovered photos on his Facebook account from an Aug. 23 Trump rally held in Glendale, Arizona. This rally occurred less than six weeks after an attempted assassination of Trump in Pennsylvania. Images retrieved from Tamayo-Torres’ social media account allegedly depict him holding firearms he is legally barred from possessing.
Tamayo-Torres’s arrest took place in Southern California, while federal authorities were coordinating his extradition to Arizona, where he faces charges for the alleged threats and firearms violations. This attempt to assassinate Trump is just one of the latest threats made against him since running for a second term. Last month, the Department of Justice announced charges in an alleged Iranian-backed plot targeting Trump.
In September, Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, was apprehended near the West Palm Beach golf course of Trump. He was armed with an AK-47 and surveillance equipment. Routh was reportedly lying in wait in the hedges before being spotted and fired upon by Secret Service countersnipers. He was arrested in Martin County and later indicted on multiple federal charges, including an attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate.
In August, another Arizona man named Ronald Lee Syvrud was arrested for an alleged assassination attempt against Trump during his visit to a section of the U.S.-Mexico border wall in Sierra Vista, Arizona. Fortunately, the Daily Mail tipped off Trump about it.
In July, 38-year-old shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire at Trump while the then-candidate was at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump suffered a grazed ear, while rally attendee Corey Comperatore was killed during the attack. Crooks was neutralized by Secret Service agents on-site.
